Missions in South Africa
1820 Missionaries to South Africa
Pastor Glen's great great great grandparents Reverend William & Ann Shaw arrived on a ship called the Aurora in Algoa Bay, South Africa on the 15 May 1820. The Scotsman Reverend William Shaw was the chaplain for the 1820 settlers, a Wesleyan preacher sent by the London Missionary Society. He set up mission stations all over the Eastern Cape and was often the mediator between the Cape Governor, Lord Somerset and the great Zulu king, Shaka, as well as the legendary Xhosa king, Hintsa. He would often ride over 500 miles a month on horseback, overseeing all the mission stations. The terrain was rugged and perilous with dangerous warriors and wild animals such as the black mamba snake, lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, crocodiles and the greatest man killer of all, the hippopotamus. He became the Superintendent General for the Wesleyan Missions for South-Eastern Africa. President Nelson Mandela referred to him in his speech to the Annual Conference of the Methodist Church as follows: "Your Church has a proud record of commitment to the development of Africa's sons and daughters in more areas than one. The great institutions of learning which spread from the Reverend William Shaw's 'Chain of Mission Stations' in this region shaped the minds and characters of generations of our people. as well as many of our present leaders."
